Both have their benefits, but which one is right for YOU?
Sauerkraut and kimchi have been a homemade condiment for centuries now, and many families have delicious recipes handed down through generations. But in 2019’s fast-paced lifestyle, many are opting to purchase their krauts and kimchi (like ours!) from their local grocer instead. We’re not here to tell you that one is better than the other, but instead we’re going to look at all the benefits of each so you can make an educated decision on what works best for you.
Homemade Sauerkraut and Kimchi
Traditional:
This is where those generational recipes come in! You can enjoy the art of making and fermenting your own jars of sauerkraut and kimchi by following traditional recipes handed down to you (or your friends, or on the internet). Investing in clay pots or using specific ingredients your grandma used to use are all ways to enjoy and appreciate the history of the condiment.
Variety:
One of the most obvious ways homemade sauerkraut and kimchi might be your favourite is the fact that you can come up with your own recipes, and test out as many flavours as you want! Plus you can use your own veggies - if you’ve grown them! Sauerkraut isn’t just plain cabbage and salt, it can be whatever you want it to be, so if you’re really wanting to ferment some strawberries in your kimchi, be our guest (and tell us how it went!)
Fun:
Creating sauerkraut and kimchi from scratch can be a really rewarding process, and although your house might stink just a little bit afterwards, you’ll be happy knowing it’s from hard work. And enjoying that kraut or kimchi with friends and family can be just as fun as making it!
Store-bought sauerkraut and kimchi
Controlled:
Making kraut and kimchi at home can be really fun, but when you first start out it can be a little tricky to do really well. Store-bought sauerkraut and kimchi have the benefit of being made by professionals in a controlled environment, meaning you can open the jar and expect the same quality every time.
Nutrients:
Although all krauts and kimchis are good for you, oftentimes the ones you buy instead of make will have more - that’s because professionals like us work hard to source the best products, and test out the best, most nutritious combinations for you to enjoy. And that controlled environment mentioned above ensures that the healthy enzymes and nutrients stay in-tact for you to enjoy.
Quick:
This is probably an obvious one, but a fair few of us don’t have the time or energy to devote to learning the art of sauerkraut and kimchi, nor to actually making the stuff. Store-bought has all the flavour and nutrients you can get homemade, but with almost zero time or effort sacrificed.
Homemade and store-bought both have their own benefits that work for different lifestyles. So, tell us: which works for you?
