Why You Should Prioritise Foods With Superpowers

Salmon and Sauerkraut Salad with Chive and Garlic Drizzle – Small.jpg

We know we’ve talked plenty in the past about the gut-brain link and how important it is to keep your gut flora healthy to live a healthy life. But as it’s not only a new year, but also a new decade, it’s easy to imagine that people are writing up resolutions that focus far too much on calories in vs calories out, and less on what those calories are and what they can do to us.

Today, we’re hoping we can encourage you to look at your diet from a perspective of “how hard can each bite work for me or what am I putting into my body” rather than “how hard do I have to work to take it off”.

It’s no secret that some foods are simply better for you. Pound for pound, you’re obviously better off eating broccoli than chocolate. But some foods aren’t just nutritious in the sense that they’re low calorie, high fibre etc, but because they have super powers. The Superwomen of the food world, if you will.

So what does that look like? It makes sense that we’ll start by looking at sauerkraut - we know so much about it - of course!

If you were to eat a head of cabbage, then you’ll be getting tonnes of nutrients, such as:

  • Vitamin K

  • Vitamin C

  • Vitamin B6

  • Folate

  • Calcium

  • Potassium

  • Magnesium

  • Iron

AND sauerkraut has an increased bioavailability of normal food, which means your body is able to actually absorb more of those nutrients in the food. Oh, and let’s not forget that eating fermented cabbage is a lot more exciting to the tastebuds than plain cabbage - but we’re sure you weren’t just chomping down on plain raw cabbage in the first place.

Of course, the more healthy stuff you put in your sauerkraut, the more nutrients you’ll be absorbing, which is why our Quick Draw Slaw is such a heavyweight nutrients champion.

But, although we might be a little biased, we can tell you that sauerkraut isn’t the only food you can eat that has superpowers. Quinoa is one of the more spoken about superfoods, as it contains a complete set of branch chain and amino acids, which means not only can you make a delicious rice-substitute dish, but also build muscle tissue at the same time.

We’re sure there are plenty out there, do you have a favourite superfood?
